Three alleged wildlife smugglers have been recently held in UP. Rare ‘Sundari turtles’ have been recovered from the smugglers. The Indian flapshell turtle which is also known as Sundari turtles is included in Schedule II of the *Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which makes it illegal to hunt, trade, or keep these turtles as pets .

This large softshell inhabits deep rivers, streams, and large canals, lakes and ponds with mud and sand bottoms. It seems to prefer turbid water. Indian softshell turtle is omnivorous, eating not only mollusks, insects, fish, amphibians, waterfowl and carrion, but aquatic plants as well.
