North Eastern state Tripura has recorded the presence of its first Banded Royal butterfly , scientifically named Rachana jalindra indra, in the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. The discovery adds to the biodiversity of the region. *The species of butterfly is legally protected under Schedule II of the Indian Wildlife (Protected) Act, 1972.

The sanctuary has also been developed as a wildlife sanctuary and an academic and research centre. About 150 species of birds live in the vicinity and migratory birds visit in winter season. Established in 1972, the sanctuary has five departments: Wildlife, Zoology, Uncover, Reptiles and Birds. Clouded Leopard National Park is a part of Sipahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. Clouded Leopard National Park was established in the year of 2007. Total area of the park is 5.08 Km2.
