IORA gets new secretary general

About Indian Ocean Rim Association :

The Indian Ocean Rim Association is an inter-governmental organisation which was established on 7 March 1997. Its secretariat is in Mauritius. Its establishment was inspired by Nelson Mandela. The vision for IORA originated during a visit by late President Nelson Mandela of South Africa to India in 1995. This sentiment and rationale underpinned the Indian Ocean Rim Initiative in March 1995, and the creation of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (then known as the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation) two years later, in March 1997.

Structure of IORA:

IORA’s apex body is the Council of Foreign Ministers (COM) which meets annually.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) assumed the role of Chair since November 2019 – November 2021, followed by the People’s Republic of Bangladesh November 2021 – November 2023. The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is the current Chair.

IORA members and dialogue partner :

IORA has 23 member states: Australia, Bangladesh, the Comoros, France, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
IORA has 12 dialogue partners: China, Egypt, European Union, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
IORA became an observer to the UN General Assembly and the African Union in 2015.

What are the Major Objectives of IORA ?

The objectives of the Association are underpinned by the principle of open regionalism as below:
To promote sustainable growth and balanced development of the region and Member States.
To focus on those areas of economic co-operation which provide maximum opportunities for development, shared interest and mutual benefits.
