Every UPSC aspirant dreams of seeing their name in the final merit list. While the journey is long and demanding, there’s a lot to learn from those who have successfully cracked the Civil Services Examination. At Prashikshan IAS Institute, we believe real success stories inspire real preparation. In this blog, we’ll dive into strategies and timetables followed by UPSC toppers that helped them secure top ranks in India’s toughest exam.
1. Common Strategies Followed by UPSC Toppers
Though every topper has a unique journey, some preparation principles remain common among all:
✅ Strong Foundation with NCERTs:
Most toppers begin with a thorough reading of NCERT books (Class 6-12) before moving to advanced reference books.
✅ Smart Syllabus Mapping:
Toppers invest time in decoding the syllabus and previous year questions (PYQs) to understand the examiner’s approach.
✅ Focused Newspaper Reading:
A daily habit of reading newspapers like The Hindu or Indian Express and making short current affairs notes is a hallmark of every topper’s routine.
✅ Revision is the Key:
Success is not just about studying new things, but revising old concepts multiple times.
✅ Answer Writing Practice:
Regular practice of Mains answer writing through test series or daily initiatives helps in improving content, structure, and time management.
✅ Mock Tests & Self Analysis:
Prelims and Mains mocks are used not just for practice but for deep performance analysis and improvement.
2. Timetable Followed by Toppers – A Realistic Glimpse
Here’s a sample timetable inspired by various toppers like Anudeep Durishetty (AIR 1, 2017), Tina Dabi (AIR 1, 2015), and others:
| Time Slot | Activity |
| 6:30 AM – 7:30 AM | Wake up, freshen up, and newspaper reading |
| 7:30 AM – 9:30 AM | Static subject (e.g., Polity/History) |
| 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM | Break / Breakfast |
| 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM | Continue with static/optional subject |
| 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM | Lunch + Power Nap |
| 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM | Current Affairs revision / Notes making |
| 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM | Practice MCQs / Prelims Test Papers |
| 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM | Tea Break + Light walk |
| 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM | Mains Answer Writing Practice / Essay |
| 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM | Dinner + Relaxation |
| 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM | Quick Revision + Plan for next day |
| 10:30 PM | Sleep |
🔔 Note: Timetables must be customised according to individual strengths and weaknesses. What worked for a topper might not work for everyone. Discipline matters more than fixed timing.
3. Lessons Learnt from Toppers
- Consistency > Intensity – Small consistent efforts every day are better than random heavy study days.
- Quality Study > Quantity Study – 6 hours of focused study is better than 10 distracted hours.
- Don’t Ignore CSAT & Optional – Many toppers give equal importance to these areas, especially since CSAT has become a hurdle for many.
- Test Yourself Regularly – Give tests regularly, not only to assess preparation but to build exam temperament.
4. Final Words: Let Toppers Inspire You, But Create Your Own Path
Every topper has a story, but their strategy is just a guiding light, not a rigid roadmap. Be inspired, but stay original. Use their techniques, but build your own success story. At Prashikshan IAS Institute, we help you blend toppers’ strategies with personalized mentorship and guidance.
